Module 2 Day 1 & 2 - Tuesday, September 5

Welcome to Week 2 of Leadership Development!  Module 2 officially opens today (some of you took advantage of an early opening yesterday) and is due Friday, September 8.  Keep in mind that due to Labor Day you are doing 2 days worth of work today so use your time wisely.

Now that you have completed your first module, here are a few tips to help you be successful with Module 2:

• Preview the module.  Before starting your work, go through the module.  To do so, click on the Learning Modules Quick Link on the home page that looks like this image:   Check to be sure you can view the notes (remember to enable mixed media) and open the quizzes and assignments. 
• Look for the big picture ideas.  What is the module about? What are the main ideas listed in the introductions? What vocabulary will you be learning? What are the two lessons about and how do they relate to the module's title? How does this module fit with what you learned in the previous module?
• Remember that each lesson is a matching set.  The lesson Introduction, the Notes/Check Your Knowledge, the Practice Activity, and the Assignment are interconnected.  You will use what you learn in the notes to help you in the Practice and the Assignment.  The Practice Activity is always something that will help you do the Assignment.  Remember Module 1 Lesson 1? You reflected on yourself in the Practice and then used that reflection to help create an introductory Padlet. What about Module 1 Lesson 2? Your Practice asked you to take an online self-assessment and to reflect on your scores. Then your Assignment asked you to pick one strength or weakness from your practice and create a leadership goal (you learned all about goals - SMART and CLEAR - in your Lesson 1 Notes).  
• Read, read, and reread the directions and the rubrics. The directions are very detailed and usually include steps to follow. The rubrics are based on the directions so be sure to read them very carefully.  For example, the rubric for Module 1 Lesson 2 Assignment asked for stops as well as strengths and weaknesses. To be sure you understand what is being asked of you, go back to read about stops in the directions and think about why strengths/weaknesses are a part of the assignment. If something does not make sense, read the directions and read the rubric. Part of leadership development is problem-solving. If you cannot solve the problem, reach out to me and I will help you. 
• Read the Daily Announcements. You should already receive an email with the daily announcements -- if you do not, please adjust your Canvas notifications. The announcements are also posted in my blog (celebrations are not due to privacy laws). They are non-negotiables to doing well in this class!  I will explain assignments and offer tips that are not found in the Canvas modules.
• Check Course Messages in your Inbox. Just like announcements, I send important information via Canvas. For example, I shared a video with you last week on how to find and view notes.
• Resubmit.  If a link does not work, resubmit a working link. When an assignment is missing important elements, redo and then resubmit. For example, Module 1 Lesson 2 asked you to chose a leadership goal.  Several students created their Prezis around life goals. They tweaked their presentations using my suggestions and resubmitted for full credit.
• Turn in missing work even if it is late. Sign-up for Remind by texting @tcdettman to 81010 and you will not miss a due date! But if you do...be sure you understand the NCVPS late work policy -- 10 points off for 1 week late (starting the minute after the due date passes), 20 points off for 2 weeks late, and then 50 points after the second week.  Remember that those points are deducted after the work is graded. If you are going to make-up work from past modules, you must set up a plan with me -- no plan, no grade.

Module 2 Pre-Assessment  Do not worry if you do not know everything -- use your test-taking skills to help you make educated guesses.
Module 2 Lesson 1 Practice Activity - Case Study: Steve Jobs  Heard of Steve Jobs and Apple?  For this activity, you will read a short biography about his dynamic leadership. As you read, fill out the template (linked in the assignment) by offering specific evidence of each leadership theory he practiced on the job. Be sure you are choosing evidence that fits the appropriate theory -- you are being graded on how well you can apply the theories to a real-world example.
Module 2 Lesson 1 Assignment - Four Core Leadership Theories  Now that you have applied the leadership theories, for this assignment you will showcase your understanding. You have the choice of creating a Prezi or making your own graphic organizer.  If you had issues with Prezi, I encourage you to try it again -- it is important for leaders to persevere! Whether you create a Prezi or a graphic organizer (there is a suggested one in the assignment), be sure you are following the directions and including the information listed in the rubric.  Your job is to showcase your understanding of the leadership theories. When you share a strength and a weakness for each theory, consider how a leader would use this theory in the real-world (just like Steve Jobs) -- feel free to add what you learned about Steve Jobs...the lesson practice activity will always help you complete the lesson assignment.
