This week is Thanksgiving. When the Pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower to Plymouth, Massachusetts, they needed leadership and guidance to make the new settlement a success. Leadership in Plymouth was very important to keep the settlement and people thriving once the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth. The first governor or leader of Plymouth was John Carver, but he died very soon after they settled. However, the second governor of Plymouth was a man named William Bradford and he had a lasting leadership presence in the new settlement. It is said Bradford’s leadership qualities of “wisdom, stamina and vision were large factors in the success of the Colony.” He was such an influential leader that he held the position of governor for 36 years! (“Leadership in Plymouth Colony (Links to an external site.)” no author, Pilgrim Hall Museum)
Think about all the leadership qualities that not only William Bradford had, but all the Pilgrims as well. They had to sacrifice their entire lives to leave England, but they also had to have a huge commitment to their new life in the new world. Would we be willing to do that?
