A special thank you to Destiny for self-advocating and for advocating for others as well!

Weeks 10 and 11 began last week.  Remember that because these two weeks are about Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, they are due together on Monday, October 31.  To stay on schedule, you should be working on finishing Week 11 work today.

The 5th habit is "Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood."  The most important part of communication is listening. Covey says that we listen autobiographically or we miss the meaning of what someone is saying because we are focused on our own experience.  We rush into other people's issues and try to fix them by giving advice without taking the time to truly understand the problem.  When you do not listen actively, you end up responding in one of the following ways:
1.  Evaluating - you judge and then agree or disagree
2.  Probing - you ask questions from your own frame of reference
3.  Advising - you give counsel, advice, and solutions to problems
4.  Interpreting - you analyze others' motives and behaviors based on your own experiences

Consider opening yourself up to listening the next time someone talks to you.  You are vulnerable when you are truly listening which means you are also influenceable therefor able to influence others. Once you understand what someone is saying, you can then be understood.

The 6th habit is SYNERGIZE.  It is the 3rd habit that deals with interdependence. According to LeaderU, this habit can be summarized with four ideas:
  • You don't have to take insults personally.
  • You can sidestep negative energy.
  • You can look for the good in others.
  • You can express ideas, feelings, and experiences in a way that will encourage others to be open also.
