Today I celebrate YOU!  I am thankful that you are in my class and that you are sharing your leadership journey with me!  Enjoy your holiday!

Let's Celebrate Our History
This week is Thanksgiving. When the Pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower to Plymouth, Massachusetts, they needed leadership and guidance to make the new settlement a success. Leadership in Plymouth was very important to keep the settlement and people thriving once the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth. The first governor or leader of Plymouth was John Carver, but he died very soon after they settled. However, the second governor of Plymouth was a man named William Bradford and he had a lasting leadership presence in the new settlement. It is said Bradford’s leadership qualities of “wisdom, stamina and vision were large factors in the success of the Colony.” He was such an influential leader that he held the position of governor for 36 years! (“Leadership in Plymouth Colony (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.” no author, Pilgrim Hall Museum)
Think about all the leadership qualities that not only William Bradford had, but all the Pilgrims as well. They had to sacrifice their entire lives to leave England, but they also had to have a huge commitment to their new life in the new world. Would we be willing to do that?

Module 14 is due next Monday.  You have 2 new modules left!  Our course ends on December 14th - please note that you have another Catch-Up Week and that your final exam module opens on December 4.  I hope you enjoy your short week at school and have a wonderful holiday break!  NCVPS is closed Thursday and Friday of this week for the Thanksgiving holiday.  You will be able to access the course during the break.
Important Dates:
  • Module 14 Empowering Others Due November 26
  • Progress Report November 29
  • Module 15 Let's Lead! Leadership in Action Due December 3
  • Catch-Up Week December 4-10
  • Final Exam Module Opens December 4
  • END OF THE COURSE & FINAL EXAM MODULE Due December 14
Got exam anxiety?  Whether final exams have begun or will begin soon at your school, it is completely normal to be stressed now.  To avoid exam anxiety, practice some of the principles you have learned this semester.
  • Plan ahead.  You have tools to help you plan ahead like the weekly planner from Module 3 - go ahead and plan the next few weeks.  Build in time for review as well as time for relaxing (just be sure the relaxing does not take more time than the reviewing!). Looking at your schedule will help you balance school, sports, work, friends, family, and exam preparation.
  • Avoid time wasters.  In Module 3, you identified what causes you to procrastinate.  Stay away from those distractions when you are preparing for your exams and use them as rewards for when you need a break.
  • Focus on your goals.  Starting in Module 1, you set leadership goals.  What do exams have to do with your leadership journey?  How will doing well on your exams help you move closer to your leadership goals?
  • Pick an exam practice. What do you worry about most when it comes to exams - time management, review, etc.?  Apply what you learned from Module 10 to be responsive and resourceful now.
  • Remember your commitments.  In Module 12, you explored perseverance and commitment.  Take a look at your commitment tree again - each thing on your tree is about making you a better leader.  Think of doing well during finals as one of the ways to move closer to and/or honor those commitments.  And like the leaders you have researched this semester,  persevere and push through your fears.
Got Resources?  NCPVS provides lots of resources outside of our course to support you.  For virtual help from a peer, go to the Peer Tutoring Center. For technology issues, issue a help desk ticket with the Virtual Support Center. To learn more about the world around you, attend a Culture Cafe session. Click on the visual below to explore all of the resources NCVPS provides to you:

This Week's Assignments:
  • Module 14 Lesson 1 Assignment
  • Module 14 Lesson 2 Notes and CYK
  • Module 14 Lesson 2 Practice Activity
  • Module 14 Lesson 2 Assignment
Module 14 Lesson 1 Assignment - Empowering Me
Using your Lesson 1 Practice, you will create a stick figure version of yourself that shows your potential as well as your dedication to being an empowering leader.  For each "body part," use the key at the bottom of the template to fill out each section.  Be sure you are explaining each item you identify on your stick figure.  In addition to your Lesson 1 Practice, you are encouraged to review previous assignments where you explored your goals, mission, and/or vision.  Looking back is a self-reflective practice and will get you ready for your final exam activities.
Module 14 Lesson 2 Notes and CYK
Lesson 2 is "How to Empower Your Followers."  You will explore the following topics:  Benefits of Empowering Others, How to Empower Others, Dialogue, Feedback, Trust, Delegation, Empowering Generation Z.  When you screenshot your quiz results, be sure to include enough information to identify which quiz you took.
Module 14 Lesson 2 Practice Activity - Empowering Generation Y
To lead effectively in today's world, you must understand the culture.  You are a member of Generation Z, however, you will be leading members of Generation Y as well as Z in your lifetime.  This activity will help you learn more about Generation Y by interviewing a millennial.  As you complete your interview, compare and contrast the two generations.
Tips:
  • Do not interview yourself - that defeats the purpose of learning more about your generation.
  • Be sure to include the name and the year born of the person you interview so that it is clear you interviewed a millennial.
  • As you interview, think about how you could use the information from the notes - dialogue, feedback, trust, delegation - to empower the person you are interviewing.
Module 14 Lesson 2 Assignment - The Empowerment Game
How do you empower others from different generations?  This assignment asks you to interview someone from outside of your generation (a millennial from Generation Y) so that you will better understand how that individual thinks and what that individual needs to feel empowered.  The rest of the assignment asks you to put that information with what you know about your own generation (Generation Z) to create a plan for empowering both generations...through a video game.  Why a video game?  That's simple...Generation Y prefers streaming services Netflix, PCs, and FaceBook while Generation Y prefers video game consoles, tablets, and are more private about what they share online.  While 73% of Gen Zers game, 66% of Gen Yers game -- it is an area where both generations share an avid interest.  The content of your game is the focus of today's assignment...do not get lost in the video game mechanics.  Focus on empowerment.  To learn more about how technology can reach both generations, read an article that outlines how to capture the attention of both generations using social media.  Recognizing what grabs both generations attention will help you design an empowerment game.  Click on the visual below to read the article:
Fortnite Challenge: Where To Find Shooting Galleries
This assignment allows you to combine your understanding of empowerment with your creativity. You will design a video game that chronicles how characters from Generation Y and Z are empowered.  Remember to clearly show your understanding of the differences between the 2 generations and to focus on empowerment.  To do so, you must show different pathways through the game for each generation. Consider the notes about Generation Z (as well as your own ideas since you are one of them!) and your interview with Generation Y - both desire empowerment, but what is the pathway to get them there? Have fun!
Tips:
  • Remember to clearly show your understanding of the differences between the 2 generations and to focus on empowerment.  To do so, you must show different pathways through the game for each generation.
  • Consider the notes about Generation Z (as well as your own ideas since you are one of them!) and your interview with Generation Y - both desire empowerment, but what is the pathway to get them there? Have fun!
  • Avoid repeating words for both generations - your job is to clearly communicate your understanding of each generation.
  • Be sure to show the differences between each generation. What can you add to your game that will clearly explain the differences between Generation Y and Z?
Need More Information?
Just as Rosie the Riveter represented empowerment for WWII, women continue to represent empowerment in today's world.  Why do you think women are seen as the catalyst for change and equality?  The United Nations Women's organization offers one explanation for how women affect the development of the world.  Check out their exploration of empowerment by clicking on the picture of Malala Yousafzai, a modern empowered woman you have studied this semester, below.
