Today's Assignments:
  • Module 8 Lesson 2 Assignment
Module 8 Lesson 2 Assignment
In this assignment, you will use what you learned in Lesson 2 along with research you completed in the Lesson 2 Practice Activity to create a resume and cover letter for one of the leaders in Lesson 2.  Your job is to focus on leadership experience and show why the American leader is great.  Not only does this activity showcase how you apply your knowledge, it gives you the chance to practice resume-writing which is a necessary college and work-place skill.
Tips for Leader Resume:
  • Remember that this resume is about a leader from Lesson 2 and not about you. You will write your leadership resume later in the course.
  • Start by writing an objective - use the objective starter in the assignment directions.  Once you know your leader's objective (why you are writing a resume), you will know more about what template to choose.
  • Find a resume template and create your leader's resume.  There are recommended applications in the directions and sample of resumes below in this announcement.   The sample below was made in Canva.
  • Be sure you include at least 3 examples of work experience for your leader.  In order for an employer to hire your leader, that leader's previous jobs must be explained.  If you leader was a president, his experience should include things done in addition to being president and not just that he was president.
  • Remember to use leadership traits from Module 2: Integrity, Discipline, Perseverance, Commitment, Empowering, Communication, Confidence, Empathy, Creativity, Delegate, Reflection.
  • At least 3 references are required.  References include people around a leader on a regular basis who could verify the leader's character and leadership. Aside from family, who could fit those qualifications?
Tips for Cover Letter:
  • Then compose a cover letter that includes the elements listed in the directions.
  • Go beyond the resume.  Your cover letter should not be just another version of your resume.  It should provide specific evidence of why this person is the best example of a leader.
  • Highlight 2-3 important leadership skills in your letter about a leader.
  • Focus on what your leader has and not on what your leader does not have.  Do not apologize for anything you think your leader is lacking.
  • For your leader's address, it is okay to make-up one.
  • Remember to sign your leader's letter.  If is customary to use cursive so put your leader's signature in an appropriate font.

Writing a resume and a cover letter are necessary skills for the real world.  What does a resume look like and how do you put on together?  To see one example of what a resume can look like, view the sample resume for a job in the construction industry below.  To learn about how to prepare a resume (including verbs to use to show leadership as well as two other resume samples), click on the construction resume.
