Weeks 10 and 11 begin today. Because we are learning about Stephen Covey's habits, the assignments are spread out over 2 weeks/modules. Weeks 10 and 11 will be due together on Friday, March 17. Be sure to manage your time over the next 2 weeks! I recommend following the normal schedule and doing Week 10 by this Friday and Week 11 by the 17th.
You continue to develop your leadership skills -- you will get out of this course what you put in so be sure you are open to growth. If you see the class only as something to do to get a grade, you are not growing. Embrace the course you will reap the rewards.
Ready, learn, lead!
For the next two weeks, you will explore Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of the Most Effective People.
Learn about each of the 7 habits (as well as the 8th...added after his original book was published) and then apply the habits to your life. A habit is defined as a practice or tendency that is difficult to give up. Habits can be good (like Covey's) and habits can be bad (like procrastination). What bad habit(s) will you replace and what good habit(s) will you adopt?
Week 10 Tips
Habit 1, Habit 2, Habit 3, Habit 4 - Read the questions before you read the content. For each question, offer at least 3 complete sentences for your answer. Then reread the questions and review your answers. Did you fully answer the questions? Did you answer all of the questions? Did you cite the text in your answer? Did you demonstrate why your answer is correct and prove your points? Consider the skills you have been sharpening this semester. Did those skills show up in your post? Navy Seals say it best when they say "anything worth doing is worth over-doing." Completing a task feels awesome but if you did not do the task well, you wasted time.
Covey Forum - if the site does not open in Canvas, cut and paste the URL into a new page and/or new browser. Explore the site -- read teen stories from around the world, pick the baby steps you want to track, find your voice using the voice finder, take the checkup quiz, explore the help desk topics, and do complete the great discovery act to create your own mission statement. This site is full of relevant, real advice so take the time to get the most out of it. Answer all of the questions in the prompt and be sure to explain the parts of the site that you find the most interesting. Offer details as evidence of your understanding.
Menchen Journal - If you have trouble responding to a quote, research the concept of the quote. Avoid vague statements -- explain your ideas in detail. Be sure your answers relate to the Covey Habits. You must show your understanding of the content to get full credit.
Week 11 Tips
Habit 5, Habit 6, Habit 7 - Read the questions before you read the content.
Making Good Decisions Better - Before reading the article, read the questions. As you read, take notes on the answers and find quotations from the text to use as evidence. Then answer the questions in your post so that your classmates can comment. Be sure you answer each part of the question and that you connect to Covey's habits. If you do not have examples from your life, use a TV, book or movie character. When you answer #4, consider the quality that you chose from Week 7's "A Life That Counts" post -- is the quality the same? why or why not?
Life Dreams Journal - You have already discussed your life dreams in previous assignments. Now it is time to go to the next level -- how will you use what you have learned in this course to make those dreams come true? Start your entry by explaining the quote -- consider your definition of love and of work. Do not just repeat your ideas from Week 6...offer proof of your growth.
