Week 16 is due Wednesday.
Our course ends Friday, August 12.  We have 5 days left in our course!  If you are behind, you need to make a plan and catch up.  If you wish to finish early, go ahead and look at Weeks 17 & 18 so you are mentally preparing for your final exam activities. Week 16 is our last week of new material so you are only a few modules away from finishing the classwork portion of the course. You got this!

Week 16 Assignment Tips:
Empowerment Reading - Be sure you use the text to answer each questions.  For example, to answer question #1 you should explain the 3 obstacles outlined in the article.  When you consider a person you know or from history to answer #4, consider someone you have not discussed in the course so far.  Remember that empowerment is not the same thing as inspiring or supporting.
Empowerment Movie Poster 16.2 - Read the story about Ben Carson (the presidential candidate).  Be sure you understand his story of empowerment (do not worry about the media mess surrounding his run for president when you read).  Now consider another story of empowerment -- your own or someone else's.  Remember you can make one up as long as it fits the empowerment concept.  Then create a movie poster advertising a movie about this person's story.  Be creative!  Offer enough details on the poster so that it is clear you understand empowerment and so that this person's story is appealing to an audience.  You may use any application you wish to create one -- I recommend that you try Posterini (I used it to make the visual on our homepage with Lincoln).
Persuasion Discussion Forum - Once again, this discussion post should be 150 words.  Refer to the quote and/or the story about the Wind and Sun in your answer.  Address a time you were criticized AND address how a leader can help someone who feels this way to move forward.  Remember to reply to at least one classmate -- take the time to offer more than just "I agree" or "I like your idea" kind of replies.
Roosevelt Journal - In at least 150 words, explain T. Roosevelt's quote and why you agree or disagree with him.  Consider the idea of delegation as you answer this journal.  For example, during a family meal like Thanksgiving the clean-up process in my family was always delegated.  One person cleared the table and put away the food, one person washed, one person dried, one person put away, and one person cleaned the table and counters.  How would that process be different if someone meddled the whole time?  While the criticism may come from a good place, what effect does someone telling you to do something and then telling you how to do it while you do it have on you and on the process?

Remember the vocabulary from the beginning of each unit?  All of the vocabulary has been included at the beginning of Week 17-18 so that you can reference definitions and choose the best words for your guidebook.  Be sure to include the vocabulary in your final exam activities!

A note about quotes...many of you have listed the quotes as one of your favorite parts of the course.  You have picked a few of your own this semester but now you have the opportunity to pick many!  Find different quotes whenever possible so that you have the chance to use your leadership online skills.  Be sure to cite the quotes (can be internally in the guidebook or as a works cited with your guidebook).

What little steps have you taken this semester in your leadership journey?  Where will you go next?  Your inventory should answer these questions.  Your inventory is a reflection or a response to what you have studied this semester.  I need to see how well you interact with the material from the course.  You need to show that you can evaluate ideas and make connections between the ideas in the material and your own.  To justify your opinion, give reasons supported with examples from the text. Here is a great example from a student's Week 15 Journal of how to answer a question with your ideas as well as with the text:
"I believe that it is much better for a leader to be honest.  No leader will ever be completely favored by everyone, so it is better for the leaders to focus on what they can control – honesty.  Even if the truth may initially seem to hinder a leader, it has been shown by the example of Kennedy provided that the presence of honesty will often improve situations.  As Stephen Covey said “Moral authority comes from following universal and timeless principles like honesty, integrity, treating people with respect.”  This quote shows that leaders will not gain popularity through their perfection, but will instead gain followers from being true to themselves and the people around them.  Covey also notes in the quote that a good leader will treat people with respect.  If leaders are honest to their followers, then they are showing their followers respect because they believe their followers have the right to know the truth."
